AI governance should not begin with risk
It should begin with a more fundamental question: what are we trying to achieve with AI? An organisation can govern individual Uses carefully and still make poor decisions if those Uses are disconnected from business priorities.
Australian Government guidance recommends documenting strategic intent for AI and aligning AI adoption with organisational strategy and values. Swell connects Strategy → Roadmap → AI Register so governance remains linked to business purpose.
Objectives, Initiatives and AI Uses
Objectives describe meaningful organisational outcomes. Initiatives represent planned or active bodies of AI-related work. AI Uses represent identifiable organisational uses of AI. These concepts are connected but not interchangeable.
An Initiative can result in several AI Uses, and an AI Use can exist without a formal Initiative. Strategic alignment never replaces governance assessment or approval.
Expected value × readiness
The Portfolio view keeps Expected Value and Readiness as separate Low / Medium / High dimensions. Swell deliberately does not combine them into an opaque composite priority score.
High-value/low-readiness opportunities may warrant capability investment, while low-value/high-readiness items may be easy quick wins. The matrix supports management judgement rather than replacing it.
Progress means more than activity volume
The Progress view can show Objective alignment, Initiative counts, related AI Uses and dated Measure positions. More pilots or more AI Uses do not automatically mean better Strategy execution.
The useful question is not “How much AI are we doing?” but “Are we doing the AI that matters?”
Using Swell AI
Strategy Studio
Swell’s Strategy Studio brings together Direction, Focus, Objectives, Measures, Principles and Assemble. It provides four lenses: Strategy Map, Portfolio, Roadmap and Progress.
The Strategy is deliberately lightweight. Swell is not intended to become a general corporate strategy or project-management platform.
Strategy Versions preserve history
A Strategy Version can be Draft, Current or Superseded, with only one Current Strategy Version at a time. When direction changes, Swell preserves the previous version rather than rewriting history.
This allows management to reconstruct why an Initiative or AI Use was originally aligned to a particular Objective.
Now, Next and Later
Roadmap positioning uses Now / Next / Later as a strategic planning horizon separate from Initiative lifecycle. The horizon answers when the organisation expects to focus on something; lifecycle answers what stage the Initiative is currently in.
Delivered does not mean Approved, and Production does not mean Approved. Delivery and governance remain separate facts.
